This exquisite skull or 'calavera' was hand-beaded by artisans of the Huichol community in Santa Catarina, Mexico. In Mexican and South American culture, death is embraced as a natural part of our human existance. In November they observe 'Dia de los Muertos' or 'Day of the Dead'. This is viewed not as a day of sadness, but as a day to honour the lives of loved ones who have passed on in vibrant and colourful celebration. The spirit of this custom is embodied in these mesmerising works of art. Using Campeche wax (beeswax) and a spectrum of tiny beads, the artisans of the Huichol community painstakingly adorn skull moulds with traditional pre-Colombian symbols to form kaleidoscopic patterns. A stunning amount of time and skill goes into the creation of each piece. Each intricate design is completely unique and is a must-have for anyone with a true appreciation of Mexican folk art.
